I'm waiting eagerly for the non- format so that I can have the privilege of owning THE LATE BIRD by Greg Pincus. I've read so many of Greg's wonderful, funny, heartwarming, laughter-making poems on Gottabook, and having them in a collection will be fabulous!
Greg Pincus has written a fun, witty, and enjoyable bunch of poems. I have been following his blog Gotta Book for a long while, but it's nice to have a collection for reading to my boys with lots of word play and puns to enjoy. We're looking forward to Greg's next book!
Clever enough to delight the smart kids, funny enough to sustain the rest of us. These clever poems are a love letter to words, and the children who grow up reading this book will learn to love them, too. Greg Pincus is an empathetic and powerfully skillful writer, and I highly recommend this fun and funny collection.
The Late Bird reminds me of Jack Prelutsky's classic - The New Kid on the Block. The poems are clever and quirky, and often have a punch line at the end that makes me laugh out loud. One of my favorites is "If a Freight Train Carries Freight..." Pincus obviously loves words and all their meanings, intended or un-. The Late Bird is a gem!
These poems are FUNNY. It's technically a book for kids but anyone with a sense of humor will find this hilarious. From riding bikes to the meaning of existence, Mr. Pincus' love of wordplay and intellectual gymnastics saturate every page, surprising us and sometimes, unexpectedly, revealing deeper truths.
I grew up reading Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky, and I've always loved that type of silly poem. I bought The Late Bird hoping for something similar... and it did not disappoint! I absolutely loved 90% of the poems in the collection, especially "A Bird's Perspective," "Book Report on the Thesaurus" and "The Voice Inside." (A few of them just weren't for me, although I know when I pass the book along to my son tomorrow, he'll think those are the best of the bunch. It's all a matter of personal preference.) I loved the clever play on words and the way everyday situations were painted from a different point of view (as in "A Bird's Perspective"). Pincus ranks right up there with the best nonsense poets!
I'm kind of stingy with my 5-star reviews, but I wish I could give partial stars, because I'd give this one a 4.75 - It's definitely one I'll read over and over again! I was going to wait to buy it until there was a format available for the nook (I don't own a ), but I'm glad I didn't wait. This was well worth the purchase price!
